The arrest warrant for Luka Magnotta was issued by the Service de police de la Ville de Montreal on May 30, 2012. It was upgraded to a Canada-wide warrant by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. In the writ, Luka was accused of five counts: first-degree murder of Jun Lin; committing an indignity to the body or the human remains of Jun Lin, whether buried or not; making, printing, publishing, distributing or circulating any obscene material; making use of the mail for the purpose of transmitting or delivering anything that is obscene, indecent, immoral or scurrilous; and the final count of criminally harassing Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and several (unnamed) members of Parliament.

At the same time as issuing the warrant, police were sifting through the evidence, which was quickly stacking up against Luka. They recovered several tools outside his apartment building; a pair of scissors, two knives, a screwdriver, an oscillating saw and a hammer. His second-floor bachelor apartment became a central focus of their investigation and it was there that police discovered a pink bed sheet covered in blood next to a purple, blood-streaked shower curtain. The video 1 Lunatic, 1 Ice Pick which had originally been dismissed as a hoax was now being analyzed by police.

Interpol issued a red notice for Luka on May 31 in four official languages, Arabic, English, French and Spanish, to its 190 member countries. Montreal police told the media they were confident he fled to Europe. The next day Montreal police identified the victim in the case as Jun.

During the investigation, police were concerned they had a serial killer on their hands. Luka’s online presence indicated he may have been visiting the United States around the time a similar murder took place. The Los Angeles Police Department were in contact with the Service de police de la Ville de Montreal to determine if Luka had committed the murder in that area which took place on January 17, 2012. In that instance, the severed head and hands of the victim, Hervey Medellin, were found near the Hollywood sign by two women walking their dogs.

According to one of Luka’s many Facebook profiles, he was allegedly in Los Angles at the time of the murder “doing massages”. The victim, who was an openly gay man, had his head, hands and feet removed from his body, indicating a similar method to the killing. The body parts were discovered in Bronson Canyon Park, near the famous Hollywood sign, suggesting the killer was seeking publicity.26

Police confirmed they were in contact with the LAPD to pass along relevant information from their investigation that could relate to the Hollywood Sign Murder. The animal rights group Last Chance for Animals, in the United States later claimed responsibility for creating YouTube videos that linked Luka to the murder, hoping it would draw him out while he was on the run.
